Daily Briefing

Key Takeaways

• Russia launched a mass combined strike on Oct 7-8 coinciding with Putin's 74th birthday, killing at least 78 and wounding 215 across Pryluky (22 dead, 5 children), Kramatorsk (30-33 dead on civilian buses), and Kyiv — among the deadliest 48-hour periods of the war.
• A Russian glide bomb (UMPB D-30SN) struck two passenger buses in Kramatorsk, killing up to 33 civilians in one of the single deadliest attacks on civilian transport since the full-scale invasion began; public transit in Kramatorsk and Sloviansk was suspended.
• Ukraine's deep-strike campaign hit Russia's largest oil refinery in Omsk (~2,500 km away) and the Gazprom Neftekhim Salavat petrochemical complex in Bashkortostan (5th confirmed strike) on Oct 8, alongside the Sasta defense plant and a Yandex data center in Ryazan Oblast.
• Ukraine-US peace talks opened in Miami on Oct 9 with envoys Witkoff and Kushner presenting new proposals to a Ukrainian delegation (Budanov, Umerov, Arakhamia, Kyslytsya) alongside European national security advisers — but a separate Kyiv Independent report flags the broader Trump peace initiative as already 'falling apart.'
• A fresh Russian drone-and-KAB wave struck Zaporizhzhia overnight Oct 8-9 (third consecutive night), killing 1 and wounding 5 near residential buildings, while drone swarms tracked across at least 10 oblasts toward Kyiv, Chernihiv, Zhytomyr, and Odesa regions.
