Daily Briefing

Key Takeaways

• Russia launched its largest missile-drone strike in months on Putin's 74th birthday (Oct 7), deploying ~13 strategic bombers (Tu-95MS/Tu-160) and targeting Kyiv, Kremenchuk HPP, Trypilska TEC, and Dnipro — killing at least 2 in Kyiv's Darnytskyi district with the attack still ongoing at time of writing.
• Kremenchuk and the Kremenchuk HPP (Svitlovodsk) are the primary target of the ongoing wave, with up to 20 cruise missiles tracked inbound; the Trypilska thermal power plant in Kyiv Oblast was also struck, signaling a deliberate energy-grid campaign.
• Ukraine's drone forces recorded a 40% surge in Russian casualties in early October vs. September (2,699 vs. 1,931 over Oct 1–5), while Ukrainian drones struck Moscow Oblast's largest oil depot and caused 200+ flight cancellations at major Moscow airports.
• Russia attacked two civilian cargo ships in Bulgaria's Black Sea EEZ — the first such incident in Bulgarian waters — sinking one (Alfa Watan) and killing at least 2; EU ambassadors are simultaneously set to approve ~1,650 new sanctions listings against Russia, the largest package since 2022.
• Ukraine's Air Force warned Russia is upgrading jet drones to 800–900 km/h and that adequate interceptor stocks won't arrive until end of November, signaling a widening air-defense gap in the near term.
